Bartłomiej Chromik, author of the doctoral dissertation “Micro- and macro linguistic ideologies. The case of Wilamowice”, has received the Prime Minister’s award for “research empathy and methodological audacity in his studies on the language, culture, and history of the Vilamovians”. The dissertation was supervised by Justyna Olko and Tomasz Wicherkiewicz (UAM).
Bartłomiej Chromik hails from Kęty. He graduated from the Warsaw School of Economics and the University of Warsaw’s Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology. He works at the University’s Faculty of “Artes Liberales” and is a member of the international team at its Center for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity. He teaches classes in linguistic and cultural anthropology as well as on modern Ukraine and its culture, society, politics, and history. He has directed the research projects “Documenting the linguistic and cultural heritage of Wilamowice” (financed by the National Program for the Development of the Humanities) and “Creation of a touristic cluster in the Wilamowice Commune based on Wymysiöeryś” (financed by the Foundation for Polish Science), and is constantly engaged in actions aimed at the revitalization of Wymysiöeryś. Currently, he takes part in the project “Language as a cure: linguistic vitality as a tool for psychological well-being, health, and economic sustainability” (Team project, financed by the Foundation for Polish Science), where he is investigating the relationship between economy and language. After the pandemic, he plans to continue his research on the economic aspects of Hutsul rituals. The award has inspired him to publish a book based on his dissertation.
