Rivers, lakes, and lagoons as legal persons
will take place on
April 24, 2024
at 16:45 CET.
Granting legal personality to rivers, lakes, or lagoons is one of the most significant trends in modern law. The Whanganui River in New Zealand became the first legal entity in 2017. In September 2022, Europe’s largest saltwater lagoon, the Mar Menor in Spain, was granted legal personality, with more than 600,000 citizens supporting the initiative. A campaign is underway to recognize the Oder River as a legal person. The paper discusses the opportunities and challenges of adopting the legal personality model to protect various bodies of water.
