It is known that for language revitalization efforts to succeed, they must be community-led. This requires communities to have sufficient capacity to design, develop and implement their chosen programs. Over the past 50 years, various organizations have developed programs to provide skills training in Intergenerational Language Sustainability (ILS). To date, however, little to no formal research has been done on this training or its impact on communities. As such, we have launched a new research collaboration: INSTILS, the International Network for Skills Training in Intergenerational Language Sustainability. It brings together experienced ILS skills training practitioners, emerging scholars, and organizations seeking to create new ILS skills training initiatives. We have partnered with people from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds from both the Global North and South; each of whom bring their own unique perspective. This presentation will explain what ILS Skills are, highlight the initial steps on this journey of buildingthis new network, and explore howwe are working with experts around the world to decolonize Language revitalization, maintenance and revival.
