Rights of Nature (RoN) is a world wide growing movement, with over 550 initiatives trying to recognize legal rights of different ecosystems.
Rivers are often at the forefront of the struggle to decolonize fundamental legal categories. Case studies from Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, Ecuador, Peru and US will illustrate general principles and elements of successful RoN implementations.
In this context the recent initiative to recognize the Oder River as a legal person will be discussed in detail.
