‘We were persecuted because of the language’. An analysis of Vilamovian narratives from the perspectives of sociolinguistic and folklore studies.
The narratives of Vilamovians about postwar persecutions are individual stories that show the trauma of particular families or persons. I argue that many of them became collective stories that have been retold by members of the younger generations. These stories, which were important for the group, were transformed and are now shared by most members of the group. This process can be understood as a form of fabulization or folklorization. I will show how the methods of folklore studies can be used in the analysis of the language attitudes and ideologies that are present, especially in stories concerning the ban on the usage of Wymysorys language and folk dress after 1945.
