The 500th anniversary of the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan

Today marks the 500th anniversary of the fall of Mexico-Tenochtitlan after its long and heroic defense. But the Aztecs/Nahuas and other Indigenous people have survived colonial oppression, many forms of violence, exploitation and assimilatory policies. They continue to face and challenge the murky legacy of colonialism: racism, discrimination, marginalization and social injustice. And as Indigenous artisans travel to Ciudad de México to sell their products to tourists, you can still hear their languages spoken in the very center of the former capital of the Aztec empire.
