Between the “Heval” and the “Achnabi”: Reflections on fieldwork in North-East Syria (Rojava)

Based on my fieldwork in North-East Syria (Rojava) and engagement with the Kurdish Freedom Movement I will discuss and problematize some of the approaches towards anthropological and decolonial theory and practice. For that I will focus mostly on my experience as an ethnographer in the context of ongoing struggle of national liberation and social revolution and its consequences for my engagement with social theory. However in the process I will also highlight certain contradictions and entanglements in the political process in North-East Syria which makes it both inspiring and challenging.
