The next meeting in the seminar series: “Re-writhing the history of sexuality in late socialist and postsocialist Poland” – Agnieszka Kościańska, February 28, 2024

The next meeting in the seminar series of the Center for Research and Practice in Cultural Continuity “Decolonizing approaches to studying history and linguistic-cultural heritage. Methods, tools, results and challenges” :
Re-writhing the history of sexuality in late socialist and postsocialist Poland
will take place on
February 28, 2024

at 16:45 CET.

Drawing on ethnographic and archival materials, in this talk I aim to present a counter history of sexuality in late socialist and postsocialist Poland. This alternative narrative will challenge orientalizing assumptions that the current attacks on sexual rights result from Eastern European “backwardness,” as compared to the “developed” West. I situate this history within a global context and focus on expert discourses that inform the construction of sexuality, especially those articulated by educational, religious, and activist communities.
