Reclaiming Ukrainian Art Heritage: Methodologies and Practice

I would like to talk about the place (or perhaps the lack of thereof) of Ukraine in the mind maps of Western academics and the „inconvenient postcolonial moment” in the Russian-Ukrainian war. In the main part of my speech, I would like to bring up the case of Ukrainian Avant-garde, which contributed to and shaped European modernist art, but which stays largely unrecognized due to attributions to Russian art heritage. I would like to explore the practices that Ukrainian art historians are using to reclaime the artist and their works, highlight the challenges, and discuss the methodologies – both ones that exist as well as those that might still need to be created.
